Where is St Anton, Austria?

St Anton ski resort (Sankt Anton am Arlberg) is in the very snowy Arlberg region of western Austria.

Located on the western border of the Tyrol (Tirol) state, St Anton is approximately 100km west of Innsbruck & 198km east of Zurich. Journey times to St Anton from either location are 1½hr & 2½hr respectively.

Flights to St Anton

Gateway airports to St Anton include Innsbruck (INN)(for European & UK flight origins), Zurich (ZRH) & Munich (MUC). Both Munich & Zurich accept flights from worldwide origins. All three airports have direct train access to St Anton.

Airport & Hotel Transfers

The Powderhounds recommend taking the train from the airports to St Anton. However, for those that just cannot abide public transport or are travelling in larger groups, a private transfer from the airport direct to the ski resort may be the most efficient mode of travel. Travel times from Innsbruck are short.

Train to St Anton

From Innsbruck you can take a short taxi ride to the train station and then catch a train to St Anton in about 1¼hr. Trains leave at regular intervals (at least every 2hr), but not all are express. Trains for St Anton will be listed as going to Bregenz, Feldkirch or Zurich. Trains can also be used to access St Anton via Innsbruck from Milan, Venice, Verona & Munich.

From Zurich, St Anton is about 200km away (2&frac13hr). An express train is available to St Anton station or the Arlberg Express ski-bus. Direction of travel is Innsbruck.

The Munich airport is well served by efficient train transport which link relatively quickly with train services to ski hubs like Innsbruck. Take the S8 line from the main terminal (trains every 10min) to the major Ostbahnhof for trains direct to Innsbruck and then transfer to ski resorts. Travel time is around 4hr to St Anton from Munich airport.

If arriving in St Anton by train, most St Anton hotels are a 2-10 minute walk from the train station. If you’ve got lots of luggage, there are plenty of taxis hovering around outside the main entrance. A short taxi ride of 2kms from the train station to the Nasserein part of St Anton cost way more than it should. Save your euros and walk - its flat & a good way to see the village. St Anton is a very pedestrian friendly town (see map of town).

Driving to St Anton

The St Anton ski resort is in the wonderful position of having a major arterial road, the E60, running directly to it from the east and west. Driving to St Anton is there easy as it doesn't require the ascent of minor secondary roads to the resort base. The St Anton village is spared the traffic noise and visual intrusion of a motorway due to the Arlberg Tunnel taking it under the town.

Getting Around St Anton & the Arlberg

The main bus station is in front of the Rendlbahn gondola base, just across the road from the train station. There are local buses that operate around St Anton to enable access to various parts of the village, although it’s easy to walk around most of St Anton on foot. The main part of the village is pedestrian-only. Buses operate to Stuben, St Christoph, Lech & Zurs.

Nearby Ski Resorts

With a train station right in the centre of St Anton, a vast array of great ski resorts are available nearby. The Innsbruck area has several cracking resorts plus Austria's largest glacier ski area, Stubai Glacier. An hour further afield, the Zillertal resorts of Hochzillertal, Mayrhofen & Hintertux Glacier are excellent. In between St Anton & Innsbruck, the Oetztal, Pitztal & Paznaun valleys have Austrian gems like Pitztal Glacier, Gurgl, Soelden & Ischgl, not to mention the multitudes of secret stash resorts in between.

If that's not enough, Switzerland is easy to get to via road or train, with the Graubuenden resorts of Davos Klosters, St Moritz & a host of others all worthy of a visit from any self-respecting powderhound via the city of Chur. The Powderhounds travelled to Andermatt-Sedrun by train from St Anton in about 4hrs whilst still wearing our ski boots after a day on the slopes!
